The Mumbai Police detained two teenage college students from Colaba after they used an Instagram status to share a photo of Pakistan’s Independence Day festivities.
The two were freed following a warning, according to the police, who claimed the arrests were prohibitory in character.
A businessman from Colaba complained to Colaba police on Monday that a few youths from Colaba were adopting Pakistan’s I-Day celebration as their Instagram status, warning that this may cause intercommunal strife.
The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) of Colaba police located the lads late Monday night and took them to the police station where they were put under prohibitory custody in accordance with CrPC 151 (3). This was done as a result of the complaint.
When the police searched the lads’ cellphones, they discovered that they had used Pakistan’s Independence Day as their Instagram story status. Police confiscated their cell phones and took a screenshot of them.
A senior official said, “It seems from their conduct, manner of speaking and behavior that they were doing this with the intention of disturbing the law and order in the country on August 15.”
Pakistan, which was created in 1947 after an acrimonious split from India, celebrates the day of its independence from the British on August 14.
