In a destructive act on Sunday, protesters threw soup at the famous Mona Lisa painting in Paris, CNN said. Thankfully, a clear case protected the well-known piece of art at the Louvre Museum, preventing any damage.
Riposte Alimentaire, an environmental group, took responsibility for the incident on X (previously Twitter). According to CNN, the group said that two people who were part of their campaign were in charge of dousing the famous Mona Lisa with soup.
Every year, millions of people flock to see Leonardo da Vinci’s masterwork, a petite portrait that is slightly larger than 2.5 feet in height and less than 2 feet in width. The Mona Lisa has been the target of theft and damage in the past, despite its notoriety.
It gained international notoriety when an employee of the Louvre stole it in 1911. After an acid assault in the 1950s damaged the bottom of the canvas, protective measures were subsequently increased, including the installation of bulletproof glass.
Over the years, numerous attempts at vandalism have been made against the Mona Lisa. A woman hurled a ceramic cup at the painting in 2009; the artwork was unharmed, but the cup was damaged. CNN said that in 2022, a tourist put frosting over the protective glass enclosing the masterpiece created during the Renaissance. (ANI)
