Before approving the paceman for the T20I series against Ireland, the National Cricket Academy is monitoring Jasprit Bumrah’s recuperation and his return to competitive cricket.
The top Indian bowler hasn’t competed for ten months due to a back injury, missing the World Test Championship final as well as the Asia Cup 2022, T20 World Cup 2022, and Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Although Bumrah has begun bowling in the practice nets, it is still unclear if he is fully healthy.
The administration of the Indian cricket team is keen for Bumrah to be prepared for the ODI World Cup 2023 and for him to have ample practice time beforehand.
The NCA’s sports science and medical staff is putting a lot of effort into helping the India star return to the pitch.
Bumrah may make a return with the Ireland T20Is next month, according to CricketNext.
The personnel in charge of managing Bumrah’s ‘RTP’ or ‘Return To Play’ would want him to go through the paces beginning with four-over periods even if the aim is an ODI return looking at the global event.
Even if Bumrah were to make the team for the Ireland visit, it would be very difficult for him to feature in all three games, according to a report in news agency PTI.
However, it can be fairly confidently said that the national selection committee, which is directed by Ajit Agarkar, has not yet gotten approval from physiotherapists and physicians that the Mumbai Indians player would be healthy and available for the trip to Ireland.
“There used to be an unspoken rule that when someone returned from an extended injury layoff, he had to play some domestic cricket to demonstrate his level of fitness. Since he is not a member of the West Zone team for the Deodhar Trophy matches, I assume the NCA and selection committee have granted him an exemption.
On condition of anonymity, a BCCI source told PTI, “Also it means that, up until now, he is not match ready. Otherwise, he would have played one Deodhar game.”
After receiving a Bumrah update, the Agarkar-led selection committee will reveal the team for the Ireland visit.
“The NCA physio will provide Agarkar and Co. with a fitness report of all the players before to the Ireland selection meeting. Bumrah will be chosen if the physio’s assessment indicates that in addition to bowling four overs, he will be able to field 16 overs and then 40 overs (in ODIs) with full energy.
The insider said, “According to the most recent information, they have not given the panel the go-ahead.”
“The selectors won’t only look at bowling fitness; they would also consider if he is able to field in Sri Lanka during the Asia Cup in humid circumstances. He could have a lot of work to do down there. Therefore, it involves more than merely bowling 7-8 overs in the nets.
According to sources, Bumrah has been bowling 7 to 8 overs at the NCA, but in contrast to some of the other injured players, who have released brief videos of their return to skills training (batting bowling) on their social media accounts, Bumrah has been extremely reserved.
The top paceman delighted the crowd with an Instagram update that included a video and some images from his bowling session at the NCA.
When Bumrah was undergoing his earlier rehabilitation after his absence from the T20 World Cup, on December 16, 2022 at the NCA, he uploaded a video of himself bowling at full speed.
He was then selected for the home series but was forced to withdraw due to injury and was transferred to New Zealand for back surgery.
